Heart and Head

Author: bunn
Characters: Nimloth and Celegorm
Rating: Gen
Word Count: 1391

“You fought our enemies for us, until at last you became them. I think we might have changed that, if we’d met sooner. There’s no point hanging onto grief for things that can’t be changed.”

Celegorm pointed to the silent children, racing fleet across the sands but leaving no footmarks. “No logical point, perhaps. My Oath is no more, Doriath is lost under waves, and the Silmaril that Dior wore is a star seen by many and secure from all evil; we all agreed on that.  But does your heart believe it?”

Nimloth frowned. “The heart is a useful organ, but I don’t like letting it tell me what I should think.”

In which Nimloth is not one to shy away from her emotions and Celegorm will not allow himself to be outdone. A sombre but hopeful and beautifully written story about the tentative beginnings of reconciliation in Aman. Made me fall in love with a character I’d never really thought of much before.

Feanor is obviously a haunting presence in multiple ways throughout the rest of the Silmarillion after his death but what I love the most is how the characters (mostly his sons, but also the general population) probably have the exact same questions that I have as a reader. Does he know what he caused? Is he watching this? Does he think the lengths his sons go to are justified or did horror creep in eventually? Would he have done the same? Does he think what happened to them is an acceptable sacrifice? Does he regret, like, anything but especially the oath? I don't know and they don't know either!

one of the best choices tolkien made was to kill feanor off so early he gets one major battle and then he's out and everyone else has to deal with the fallout of his actions i love it such a messed up dude

Author: maglor_my_beloved
Characters: Maeglin and Celebrimbor
Rating: Gen
Word Count: 1360

Instead he asks, "What is your name?" The survivors of Gondolin he'd met had refused to speak of the one who had revealed their city's location – they had only told him that it had been Írissë's son, that he had betrayed them out of greed and malice. Celebrimbor had not believed it then, and he believes it even less now that the supposed traitor kneels weeping in his private chamber.

The Elf hesitates. "I have not had a name in a long time, my Lord," he replies. "I have no need of one."

Celebrimbor clenches his fist and tries to hold back his tears. He must be strong now. "What did your mother call you?"

The Elf is silent for a long time. Celebrimbor fears he might not remember.

When the answer comes, it is so quiet he nearly does not hear it.

"Lómion."

AU in which Maeglin survives the fall of Gondolin and eventually ends up in Ost-in-Ethil. Such a heartbreaking and hopeful fic. The author gets across Maeglin’s desperation battering so needlessly against Celebrimbor’s compassion so poignantly. The second chance Annatar could have had.

Charcters: Maglor and Maedhros.
Rating: Gen
Word Count: 1199

Maglor is in every sense his opposite. He is serene, his posture perfect. He sings, a lulling, peaceful sort of melody. It is practical — meant to soothe his horse, to keep her still in the midst of battle — but it gives him an eerie note nonetheless. The sun falls upon his skin and his face is pale. The wind yanks at them and his hair is motionless in his braid. Elves and orcs alike shout and scream all around him, splattering blood onto the edges of his robes and the legs of his horse, and he sings a song of cool lake water and rays the of the sun in the clouds.

It is soft, measured brutality, delicate and dignified. Later Maedhros will count the arrows and see that Maglor had killed more than any of the
m.

In which Maglor is a terrifying force of nature. Ugh there are some stories that have really good concepts and some that are just really well written and this is both! Peak powerful eldritchy Maglor in battle but told from the pov of the only character who always see him as his little brother. Loved this one!

searchingforserendipity25 asked:

hi! if you're up to it, daemags and 36? ;)

polutrope answered:

Thank you! Am I ever not up for them? From the kiss asks.

36. … to give up control

“Here.” Without looking, the Noldo flung one arm back, proffering a wooden flute. “You play that.”

Daeron accepted the instrument and twirled it between his fingers. “Hm. I would rather not.” It was simple enough for a child. It probably was for a child. “How about that lute?” He used the flute as a pointer to indicate which he meant.

Maglor threw a sharp glance over his shoulder. “No. Strings are my signature.” He moved gracefully between several other instruments—or it would have been graceful, had his trailing red robe not caught under the frame of an absurdly large harp. What madness had possessed someone to travel with such an instrument, Daeron could not guess.

“Very well,” said Daeron. “Why don’t you play the lute and I will sing?”

“Absolutely not!” Maglor cried. He tugged his robe free. “I will sing.”

“You said strings were your expertise.”

“They are. And vocals. Here,” he stretched forwards to grab what looked like an oversized aulos. “Is this more suitable for you?”
